The Carra mill

Interpretation centre, Environment and nature in Ville-la-Grand
  • The Moulin de Carra mill is a cultural and natural heritage site in Ville-la-Grand. It’s restoration has made it a lively place for meetings, education and raising awareness of sustainable development.

It is difficult to date precisely the origins of the old mill, which is located below Carra, in Ville-la-Grand. It was recorded in 1637 and, in the nineteenth century, counted as one of the 13 Foron mills and among the 200 hydraulic establishments in the Geneva basin. At that time nearly 100,000 water mills provided plenty of energy that was both abundant and indefinitely renewable, along the rivers in France. Mills played an important role economically and socially. They produced basic products mechanically: ground the flour for bread, extracted oil, pressed cloth, beat iron, ground gunpowder, and chopped pulp for paper making.
Today, the Moulin de Carra, openned to the public since 2017, is a place for promoting cultural and natural heritage, environmental education and popular education, knowledge sharing, sustainable development. In this green setting on the edge of the Annemasse agglomeration and on the border with Geneva, all audiences are invited to visit this place of breathing. For children who wish to experience nature activities, the "école buissonnière"at the Moulin de Carra is a space for experimentation and wonderment linked to nature.
Booking is necessary for groups and school parties.
